Synthetic Woman (DV 2008)
During my visit to India last year I noticed that the portrayal of women used to sell products and services in the local media (print and broadcast) did not reflect the women I saw around me in Chennai. Advertisers, copywriters, image makers are constructing a fair skinned woman that could be from “anywhere”, a global multinational everywoman, who is ambivalently Indian. This silent short video is a montage of found pictures and text taken from English language print media and screen shots taken from TV channels collected from Chennai. Synthetic Woman is an exploration of this fascistic propaganda used to form norms of culture, society and beauty.
