Media appearance on Al Jazeera

I was invited by Al Jazeera English’s magazine show Listening Post to comment on the media industry boom 14 Dec, 2007 (Scroll over to timecode 7:25). The issue up for discussion on the show was India’s burgeoning print media industry. My position, based on my longitudinal research in this area, is that news media (print and television) reflects an elitist, urban, and consumerist concern with a superficial interest in concerns of the wider population. The interest in the poor only kicks in when they provide a spectacle, such as crises and calamities.
